Your mileage may vary on how much you care about the weekly grades from our dear friends at Professional Football Focus. To me, they’re just a conversation starter - a handful of extremely subjective data points available to us. We can’t use them as gospel, but it’s helpful to see what a paid neutral observer thinks about the team.
I’ve posted KSU’s grades for a few seasons on Twitter, with a simple screenshot on both sides of the ball. This year, I’m going to try and post tables for every matchup so that you can search, sort by snaps/position/category, and generally get a little more useful experience browsing the postgame evaluations. You won’t don’t need to zoom into grainy photos anymore. If there’s interest, I will try to maintain some season-long visuals and try to dive a little deeper into some of the advanced stats at the same time. My goal is to spend a little time over the holiday weekend (like a normal person) to dial in some of the visuals and formulas future postgame analytic breakdowns.
The only trade-off: If you’re not already subscribing, I will kindly ask you to sign up for the site - completely free of charge as always. I’ve seen a trend of outlets (the main Liberty blog, Bleed Tech Blue, etc.) paywalling weekly PFF grades as part of some kind of premium subscription. The concept of charging money to republish somebody else’s work is a little sketchy, in my opinion.
If you’re the sort of KSU sicko who cares about pass blocking grades or wants to get in the weeds on snap count data, you will probably find decent value in your $0.00 monthly Hoot State subscription. If you’ve already signed up, 1) Thank you and 2) please consider sending the site to any fellow Owls who might be interested. Someone at KSU kinda weaponized the admittedly low subscriber count against me in a conversation earlier this summer, basically to question why I would continue to do this. I would love to run the numbers up this season out of friendly spite.
Anyway, let’s get to the grades from last night. Personally, when I see a 47-0 beatdown and 50ish minutes of garbage time, I want to hand out 95s across the board. Respect to the PFF staffer for locking in and being a little critical in spots.
