Opening statement: Really good Delaware team right there. Probably one of the best G6 offenses really in the nation. They throw and catch the ball better than really anybody in the country right now. I think our guys did a heck of a job of making sure that when we had to come up with the big stops, we came up with the big stops. You saw offense, defense, and special teams, all phases of the game come together and play. We talked about it all week: That was gonna be what had to happen tonight in order for us to get the victory.
When you talk about special teams in the return game, defense coming up with the gotta have it stops, and then offense creating explosive plays all night. Four quarters of football, all the way strain until the end, is what this football team showed tonight. Just really proud of the effort those guys showed.
On the whether there’s an update on the status of Rickie Collins: Not right now. We know it was an upper-body injury right now, so they’ll have an MRI and some X-rays and stuff like that tomorrow and just kinda continue to monitor and look at it. Right now, it’s inclusive on exactly what’s going on.
On Landon Varnes subbing in for 254 yards and a TD in the win: In and out of the building every single day preparing for his opportunity. He took that opportunity - he crushed it tonight. He had some things that we wish we could get back, some things, some throws. Overall, when he had to show up and when he had to play, he showed the decisiveness, the aggressive he showed coming from junior college. That’s what we saw last year when he was the #1 passer in the nation in junior college. He showcased tonight why that’s just who he is and how he manages to throw the football.
On the opening kickoff return TD: All glory to god and Davis Bryson. That guy did a great job - this week he had a chance to make the kicker miss and he did what he’s supposed to do. That set the tempo and the tone. We talked about momentum. That’s what you need when you’re at home in a game like that. You need to create some momentum. From the opening kickoff, you saw that’s what he did.
On the team’s “momentum” coming off two-straight wins: When we play our style of football - and in the last two weeks, we have played our style of football in all phases of the game. When we do that, we feel like we’re one of the better teams in this league. It took a little to kinda get our niche, so to speak. We had so many heartbreaking losses at the beginning of the season, but we talk about it all the time: The teams that are remembered are great in November. We have to do a great job down the stretch - these last twenty-whatever days in the season - we gotta do a great job of playing our style of football.
